Eggs and My Buddy

All the chickens that we bought in the spring are fully mature; you should hear the roosters tell us about it! Unfortunately, the ridiculously large amount of roosters on the farm right now have kept the hens from laying in their boxes in the barn. I wasn't sure where they were laying, until I found our little golden Araucana in the hay shed.

Look what's she's hiding:

I'm going to let her sit on these and see if we can get some late-season babies. I'd really like a few more hens than we have right now.

The strange thing is that these are all brown and blue eggs, and I really thought some of the new girls would be laying white eggs. At first I shrugged and decided that they may not be laying yet, but then remembered that Jude (my mother-in-law) said she'd found a clutch in the vegetable garden.

I went to investigate:

Not only are they white, but they're also HUGE! Almost like duck eggs. Guess the new gals are laying!

I also wanted to let everyone know that my favorite ewe, June, is still my buddy! Every time I go into the field by myself and signal to her for scratches, she comes lumbering.

Isn't she adorable?

Robin Update 5.22.13

They're getting pretty squished in their nest.

Too tire to pose for the camera . . .

The parents were close-by this morning yelling at me as I took pictures.

EmmyLou finishes up Lambing for 2013

We had a sweet little moorit ram lamb born last Thursday (May 2). We've named him Wyeth which means, "from Land by the Willow." I had been watching EL all day, but a friend and her girls stopped by and we all got distracted with frogs in the pond. They left and about an hour later, I looked outside and saw a dark spot next to EmmyLou. Since Rose was the only other dark lamb, I knew she's lambed! When I got out there, he had been walking for a while and was all cleaned off and dry. I missed the whole thing! I'm sure it's the first of many lambings that I'll miss.

Here he is when I got to him.

Kat helped me get a better look the next day.

I think he is quite handsome. Of course, it may be because he's my favorite color!

Every Farm Needs an Awesome Sign

And mine has the best sign ever! Mike and Morgan slaved to have it (mostly) ready for me for Christmas--what a surprise!

Over the past few weeks, we've worked to put the finishing touches on it: sanding, painting and sealing. Tonight Mike picked up hooks from Valu and we were finally able to hang it!

We had to run outside to get it up before we lost all daylight! But we weren't waiting another day to put it up.

Isn't it gorgeous?!
